What is Cystoscopy?
A cystoscopy is a medical procedure that involves examining the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end called a cystoscope. The cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and into the bladder, allowing the healthcare provider to view the interior of the urinary tract.
There are several reasons why your healthcare provider may recommend a cystoscopy. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Urinary incontinence
- Painful urination
- Difficulty urinating
- Bladder cancer or other abnormalities detected on imaging tests
Before the procedure, you will be given instructions on how to prepare. You may be asked to avoid food and drink for a period of time before the procedure, and you may be given antibiotics to prevent infection.
During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on your back with your feet in stirrups, and the healthcare provider will insert the cystoscope into your urethra and slowly advance it into your bladder. You may experience some discomfort or pressure during the procedure, but it is typically well-tolerated and only takes a few minutes to complete.
After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or burning during urination for a short time. Your healthcare provider will provide instructions on how to care for yourself at home, including recommendations for pain management and when to contact your provider if you experience any complications.
While cystoscopy is generally considered safe, there are some risks and complications associated with the procedure. These may include:
- Bleeding or infection
- Pain or discomfort during or after the procedure
- Urinary retention or difficulty urinating
- Perforation or damage to the urinary tract
It's important to discuss any concerns or questions you may have with your healthcare provider prior to the procedure.
A cystoscopy is a relatively simple and safe procedure that can provide valuable information about the health of your urinary tract. If you have been recommended for a cystoscopy, it's important to discuss any questions or concerns you may have with your healthcare provider. By understanding what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, you can help ensure a smooth and successful experience.
